Full Description: St. Laurence's Church dates from the 12th century; the Norman flint and pudding stone building replaced an earlier wooden parish church serving the village of Upton. By 1835 the Norman church had fallen into such disrepair that it was to be pulled down and a new parish church built. A local farmer, John Pocock, donated £50 to prevent the demolition. In 1850 a successful restoration appeal was launched to which Queen Victoria gave £50. A south aisle was added, the height of the tower was reduced and the nave ceiling was removed to reveal the wooden rafters. The Norman tower and outside walls survive together with the Norman baptismal font and piscina. Care was also given to preserve an old Norman doorway and oak arch. The church was rededicated on December 2nd 1851. During the restoration of 1850-51 the tower battlements were removed and a pyramidical top added as shown on the postcard. In 1906 the top of the tower was rebuilt into the present, more appropriate, style. The postcard was published by Charles Palmer located in Slough High Street.
