Full Description: The NAAFI Club was built in 1947/48 and opened by H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester on 28th November 1948. It stood on the site of the old guard-room of the R.H.A. Barracks. It provided recreation facilities such as a ballroom, bar, games room, TV room, and reading and writing rooms for the young soldiers. It was the fifth such club to be opened in the country and cost £70,00 to build. The club closed on 1st May 1971.
The building remained for commercial use as the Roundabout Club for several years but was finally demolished and a Burger King restaurant built on the site. The roundabout in front of the site at the junction of Wellington Avenue, Gun Hill, High Street and Station Road is called the NAAFI Roundabout in commemoration. |
