Full Description: View of Mackenzie Street as it was before it became incorporated into the Queensmere Shopping Centre during the 1960s. Mackenzie Street was named in honour of Major Edward Mackenzie, a partner of the railway contractor, Thomas Brassey. The Major had given £14,000 to the British Orphan Asylum to buy the old Railway Hotel and convert it into a suitable home. Mackenzie Street ran from Slough High Street to Slough railway station. Beyond the shops and businesses it becomes a residential tree-lined street. On the corner is the corn dealers Headington & Son, first listed in local directories in the 1890s. The firm continued to be listed as corn & seed merchants at varying addresses in Slough until 1957 when the last directory was published. The Headington family at one time owned Manor Farm in Chalvey and Cippenham Court Farm.
