Full Description: A view of a tree-lined Mackenzie Street as it was before it was incorporated into the Queensmere Shopping Centre during the 1960s. Mackenzie Street ran from the High Street to the railway station. It was named after Major Edward Mackenzie, a partner of the railway contractor, Thomas Brassey, who gave £14,000 to the British Orphan Asylum to buy the old Railway Hotel and convert it into a suitable home. This postcard shows a pedestrian turning to watch an open-top car driving down the street, as a horse and carriage approaches from the opposite direction.
Postmark of 1 September is on the reverse of the postcard which is part of the WHS Aldwych Series. |
