Brief Description: The "Old Contemptibles", veterans of World War One, parade down Wellington Avenue after the annual service in the Royal Garrison Church on Sunday 29th August 1958
Subject Date: 29 August 1958

Full Description: The "Old Contemptibles" nickname is derived, according to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, from an order issued during World War One, when Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany ordered his troops to "walk over General French's contemptible little army". The World War I veterans proudly wearing their medals march down Wellington Avenue. The Royal Garrison Church of All Saints, known locally as The Red Church from the colour of its brickwork, is in the right background.
