Full Description: This old pub built in 1857 was originally the Prince Albert beer house, until it changed its name to the Albert Hotel around 1860. It closed in 1869 and was rented by the Rev Thomas Purcell for the first St Joseph's Catholic School. A wooden building at the rear of the house was used as a chapel. This Roman Catholic Mission was opened at the instigation of the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese. The school moved to Queens Road in 1872 . Also in 1872 a temporary Roman Catholic Church of corrugated iron was brought to Queens Road from Southampton. In 1912 the present St Joseph's Church was built to replace the Iron Church. The old beer house regained its licence and became the Prince Albert Off Licence. It closed in 1956 and is now (2004) a private house.
