Full Description: This Corn Exchange building was opened in 1838, in Jewry Street, at a cost of £4,000, and its site near the railway station was an advantage. It was built of yellow brick and white ashlar to the Italianate design of Owen Carter. The Tuscan style portico was probably modelled on that of St Paul's church in Covent Garden.
The building had many uses after the Corn Exchange closed. It became a roller skating rink in 1906 until 1914, then a theatre, the Empire Corn Exchange, in 1915. It then changed its name to the Regent Theatre and in 1917 became a cinema, the Regent Picture Theatre with a restaurant and tea lounge where an orchestra played daily. The cinema closed in 1922 to be replaced by the Regent Dance Hall, but was re-converted back to a cinema, the Regent Cinema in 1933. This closed in 1936 and the City Council then spent £3,100 on its conversion to a public library which it still is today.
Beyond can be seen the Market Hotel, with the De Lunn buildings opposite.
