Full Description: The Bugle stands at the junction of West Street with Quay Street. For many years, Bussey's, a family butcher was next door, along with Haywards, the greengrocer and Hinxman's car showroom, now the West Street Parade. Hinxman's was once Coles, the coachbuilders and coachmakers to George 1V. They were once fined seven shillings and sixpence for causing a traffic jam with display coaches in the road. Haywards, the little Tudor shop, with its original clapper boarding, and which later became Sergeants Café, was probably the oldest shop in Fareham, its deeds went back to the 1400's. Beyond is the Kings Arms with the Forge Café to be found behind. Other shops during the 1940's and 50's were Shepherds, a gift shop, Lillywhites, a greengrocer who was replaced by Haywards and Hawkins, another general shop and greengrocer. Reference: 1. James, Alice.1996. Fareham, p. 77-78, 80.
