Full Description: Hook House was situated in a large estate with farms and cottages overlooking the Solent at Hook. Known as The Hook, it was built by William Hornby, former Governor of Bombay after 1783 who created a large estate here after clearing away the old village. The house was built mainly of brick, but had a very fine stone front with stone pillars holding up a balcony. The stone appears to have been brought by sea, and was taken as near to the site of the house as possible, because some of the stones that dropped overboard remained embedded in the mud. It was Georgian in style. Either William or his son John built a sea wall cutting off the estuary from the sea and drained the old tidal inlet and also demolished the old maritime houses, possibly replacing them by a small group of cottages still in Hook. The house was extended by William Hornby, grandson of the ex governor, to the design of Decimus Burton in 1838-44 but in later years it was not their permanent residence. In 1913 the house burned to the ground and only the stabling and outhouse remained.
The site was adjacent to the present playing fields of the School of Navigation.
