Full Description: These cottages were built about 1846 when they formed part of the estate of Hook Park.
Hook has evidence of Bronze, Iron Age and Roman occupation and was originally a port but nothing is now left of this. There was a tidal inlet of the sea here, running at right angles to the mouth of the Hamble estuary. It was busy with shipping as far back as the 14th century and there was a market and fair in Hamel hoke in 1354.The village was recorded as Hoke in 1575. Warsash is not recorded.
Shipbuilding and repairing were carried on from the late 15th century until the end of the 17th century. It was an important port during the Hundred Years War with France due to its position. Henry V mustered his fleet around the Hamble and Hook was a handy place for a dockyard, sheltered and at the mouth of the river. Hook sent 11 ships and 208 men to the French Wars.
Its importance declined after and it became a small farming, fishing and smuggling community until William Hornby acquired the Hook, Chilling and Brownwich lands from the descendants of the Earls of Southampton at the end of the 18th century. He built Hook House, a magnificent country house and so Hook became a country gentleman's estate.
