| Full Description: Arthur Hornby of Hook House decided to build a church and school on the common between Hook and Warsash to serve both and with the opening of the church and school in 1872 Hook and Warsash really began to come together.
The first recorded entry for the St Mary's Hook- with-Warsash School is 9th September 1872. There were 56 pupils and the headmaster was Alfred Cooper. The local vicar taught scripture and his wife and daughter (or sister) taught sewing and knitting to the girls. There were behavioural problems at the school from the beginning. The two hour dinner break led to several reprimands for bad conduct but this improved when the break time was shortened. There were also complaints that the children's lunches were being stolen from their cloakroom.
On the 21st December of the first year, the school broke up for a fortnights holiday and each child was presented with a woollen comforter as a Christmas present from Mrs. Hornby. By September 1873, many children returned late to the school after the long summer break as many were used to help gather in the harvest.
Changes to the curriculum were made constantly during the early years of the school. Geography was suggested but was not popular. Arithmetic and times tables proved more popular and the child who knew his tables recitation best, was allowed home first.
Alfred Cooper became a certified teacher in 1874 but resigned the next year after various problems with his health. On the 20 December he and Mrs Cooper left to take up an appointment in Leicestershire. His years at the school did not appear to be happy ones and his reports on the children were mainly critical.
