Full Description: The church in Southwick is called St James-Without-the-Priory-Gate. Although there has been a church here since at least Norman times, most of the present building is a reconstruction of 1566. John Whyte, who was the Earl of Southampton's servant, was granted Southwick Priory in 1538 at the dissolution of the monasteries and it was he who rebuilt the parish church having demolished most of the priory. He reused some windows. The lower part of the tower is attractive chequering of knapped flint and stone, the upper part plain, nearly all flint and of 1566. The entrance is low and panelled and well fitted inside. The 1566 windows are very plain with square tops and the arches to the north aisle are large and flat. Preserved in the arch between the north aisle and chapel is an elegant Purbeck marble double capital with foliage which must have come from the Priory. The Norman font is Purbeck marble too. Between the north chapel and the chancel is the tomb of John Whyte the builder of the church. He possibly reused an older tomb chest from the Priory which has brasses to him, his wife and children, and is mediaeval in style. Only two 18th century family pews remain. The pulpit is part of one of the pews but has its own window. The simple wooden gallery is supported on big twisted columns. Blocking most of the east window is an unusual painted wooden reredos of the 18th century with a classical painting of cherubs and doves in a pilastred surround. On the outside of the east walls is an inscription recording the rebuilding of 1566. References: 1. Draper, Jo. 1990. Hampshire The complete guide, p. 176-7. 2.
