Full Description: Nelson's Monument is situated on Portsdown Hill overlooking Portchester and Portsmouth harbour. It consists of a slender column with a bust of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson on top and is situated between two of the forts situated on Portsdown Hill, Fort Nelson and Fort Southwick. It was erected within three years of the battle of Trafalgar in memory of Lord Nelson. Officers and men gave two days pay to pay for the monument. It took a year to build the column and two captains directed that the inscription should be placed at the foot of the obelisk. The main one states Consecrated to the memory of Lord Viscount Nelson by the zealous attachment of all those who fought at Trafalgar. To perpetuate his triumph and their regret.
It was to be another thirty years before Nelson's column was raised in Trafalgar Square in London.
