Full Description: Quay Street leads from West Street to Fareham Quay and was once known as South Street. In 1930 it had 3 corn merchants with big warehouses and contained several passages and yards. Those nearer the quay had largely disappeared leaving 2 cottages set back near the viaduct and a small group of cottages which curved round the corner to the upper wharf. Cripps, the fishmongers was at No 10 in 1930, and Fareham Urban District Council offices were at No 21, an imposing Georgian house, later to become the Register office. The original telephone exchange was to become Clack's general store, the Portsmouth Evening News office was at No 25 and Clarke's yard faced sideways onto the road. Millards later converted some cottages into a shop and found an underground passage and secret hiding place. A well in the kitchen turned out to be the start of an underground passage leading to the creek. There was also a small staircase hidden beside a chimney and leading to an attic hideaway. Coins dating to 1729 were found under the floorboards. It is believed that the cottage was linked to smuggling and the cottage was linked to an old beerhouse called The Drum and Monkey. Smuggled goods were kept in Hewlett's Yard and the cottages were useful as the Customs were at the Chequers public house by the quay. Reference: 1. James, Alice. 1989. Fareham between the wars, p.51-52.
