Brief Description: St Andrew's Church, Tichborne dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Subject Date: March 1975

Full Description: The church is unusual in that it has an interior divided into Church of England and Roman Catholic sections by ornate iron railings. This is because the Tichborne family was able to retain their Roman Catholic faith and also retain their positions of eminence in the country. The village is also famous for the legend of the Tichborne Dole which is distributed annually on Lady Day, 25th march. This began in the 12th century when the dying wife, Lady Mabella, of Sir Richard Tichborne asked him to organise a charitable bequest. He is supposed to have said that each year he would grant the equivalent amount of bread made from the corn growing in an area which she could get round in a set period of time. Too weak to walk she is supposed to have crawled around a cornfield 23 acres in size. As a result each year after that the Tichborne Dole was distributed to families in the district. References: 1.
