Full Description: Portsmouth Dockyard was established in 1212 by King John and the first dry dock in the world was constructed there in 1495.
HMS Victory was the flagship for Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
The first semaphore tower was constructed on top of the Square Tower to send and receive messages from the admiralty in London. The second tower inside the dockyard destroyed by fire in 1913 and this the third tower has been built with the old Lion gate incorporated into its base. |
