Portsmouth Dockyard was first established by King John in 1212. In 1495 the first dry dock in the world was constructed in the dockyard.
The main (Victory) gate is the old entrance to the dockyard and the pillars on either side of it date back to 1711. The dockyard wall was completed in 1711 and is now a schedule monument.
The Porters Lodge to the right of the gate was built in 1708 and is still the oldest surviving building the yard. |
