Full Description: Portsmouth dockyard had a railway as far back as the 16th century when horse drawn trolleys on wooden tracks were used to move heavy mast around the yard. In the 1820's a tramway system was laid down and this was eventually replaced by a railway complex with steam engines and 25 miles of tracks in the 1860's.Trains brought the Royal family to dockyard to embark on their yacht at a specially constructed station at South Railway Jetty. The railway closed in 1977. This original photograph was taken by local photographer Henry Hocking of 1 Binsteed Road Buckland
