Full Description: Portsmouth Island Co-operative Society was formed on 24th March 1873 and its first shop opened in Charles Street. In 1887 the main store in Fratton Road opened and by 1898 had expanded to include footwear menswear and furnishing making it the largest department store in the city. On the 20 July 1934 the premises were devastated by fire. They reopened again in 1937 only to be destroyed again in an air raid on 10th January 1941. This store didn't open again until 1954.
In March 1948 the store at 147 Albert Road Southsea became one of the first self service shops in the country. |
