Full Description: This forms plate 15 of Philip Brannon. [1850]. The Picture of Southampton. The foundation stone was laid on 24 October 1849 by George Laishley, Mayor and a leading Wesleyan. He had wanted to appear in full mayoral robes, but was warned by the Town Clerk that this would be illegal: he could only be robed at ceremonies within the established church.
It is a large and handsome structure of white brick and stone, in the Decorated style. There was seating for about 1110, with a school and meetings rooms below. Inside there was a spacious nave and apsidal chancel, with an open timber roof, carved oak benches and gallery.
Opened in 1851, it closed as a church in 1925, replaced by Central Hall, St Mary Street. It subsequently became incorporated as the staff club within the new Edwin Jones department store, and was destroyed in the Blitz of 1940.
The architect was James Wilson of Bath, and the builder George Simon Brinton (Mayor 1863-4). |
