Brief Description: The Grammar School in Bugle Street, Southampton, viewed from French Street in 1827.

Full Description: The school was founded in 1554 by William Capon, Rector of St Mary's. Its first home was in Winkle Street, but in 1696 the school was removed to West Hall in Bugle Street, built in the twelfth century by Gervaise Le Riche and one of the houses conveyed by the Corporation to the executors of William Capon as security for the payment of the Master's salary. It was rebuilt so as to produce a large house with 19 rooms in three storeys. The drawing shown was published in J and J C Buckler. 1827. Views of Endowed Grammar Schools. It was at this period that the school sank to its lowest level, short of funds and obliged by its trust deeds to provide a classical education out of touch with the demands of a commercial age. At the opening of the April term 1853 there were just three pupils. The school was closed between 1854 and 1860, moving to new premises in Havelock Road in 1896 and to Kellett Road off Hill Lane in 1938. It is now the King Edward VI School.
