Full Description: Henry Wriothesley succeeded as 3rd Earl in 1581, aged 8 years. He became a royal ward, with Lord Burghley as guardian. He was the only publicly acknowledged patron of William Shakespeare; the poems Venus and Adonis (1593) and The Rape of Lucrece (1594) were dedicated to him. The exact nature of their relationship has been a matter of academic debate. For some commentators, the majority of the sonnets were addressed to Wriothesley, eight years Shakespeare's junior.
Wriothesley lived at Place House, Titchfield, and also owned Bugle Hall in Southampton. He died in 1601.
The Dictionary of National Biography says that Wriothesley's countenance probably survives in more canvasses than that of any of his contemporaries. There are probably sixteen extant portraits. |
