Full Description: James Ware was born at Portsmouth on 11 February 1756, the son of Martin Ware, successively the master shipbuilder of the royal dockyards of Sheerness, Plymouth and Deptford. Educated at Portsmouth grammar school, James went upon trial to Ramsay Karr, surgeon of the King's Yard in Portsmouth on 3 July 1770. He was bound apprentice to Karr in 1771 for five years, during which time he attended at Haslar Naval Hospital. In 1773 he enrolled as a student at St Thomas's in London. For most of his working life, Ware was a surgeon in London, specializing in ophthalmic surgery. He published profusely on medical matters. He was admitted a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1798 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1802. He died in 1815 Source: Dictionary of National Biography
