| Full Description: Born in Southampton in 1745, Charles Dibdin was christened at Holy Rood Church, where his father Thomas was parish clerk. He later claimed to be the eighteenth child. After becoming a junior chorister at Winchester College, Charles embarked on a remarkable musical and dramatic career, ranging from producing at Drury Lane Theatre, writing about 900 songs, notably sea shanties, and operas, and composing over 100 dramatic pieces. He died bankrupt in London in 1814, with a stanza from 'Tom Bowling' carved on his tombstone at St Martin's burial ground in Camden Town. A commemorative plaque was erected in Holy Rood Church in 1914 by Southampton Literary and Philosophical Society: it can still be seen in the ruins of the church.
Amongst his famous lines is "In every mess I find a friend; In every port a wife." |
