Brief Description: Portrait of Jane Austen published in 1870.
Subject Date: 1870
Creator: Richard Bentley and Son
Owner: Hampshire Library and Information Service
Contributor: Hampshire Library and Information Service

Full Description: This steel engraving was first used as the frontispiece to the Memoirs of Jane Austen published by her nephew, Rev James Edward Austen-Leigh, in 1870 (it was not used in the second edition of 1871). It is based on a watercolour sketch by her sister, Cassandra, done about 1810. This is the only known representation of Jane's features, and, although rather amateurish, is acknowledged to be a faithful representation. The original is in the National Portrait Gallery. The 1870 print was probably mediated through a watercolour miniature made from Cassandra's watercolour by Mr Andrews of Maidenhead, about 1869. Reference: Le Faye, Deirdre. 1998. Jane Austen, p. 8-9.
