Full Description: Sir Arthur Blomfield designed and built this imposing church, 1887-89. Appropriately in the Perpendicular style, the church was intended to look like the chief parish church of a great town. Externally faced in flint, it is set off by a tall, pinnacled East Anglian tower. To David Lloyd, it is "architecturally splendid, if not quite outstanding". The existing church, built by Thomas Owen of Southsea in 1843, was inadequate by 1883. Canon Edgar Jacob turned to Arthur Blomfield, whose brother was his curate, to build a much bigger church. Well over half the cost was met by W H Smith (son of the eponymous founder of the booksellers and a Cabinet minister), whom apparently Jacob met by chance on a train. References: 1.
