Brief Description: Presentation of Long Service Medals to men of the 1st Volunteer Regiment of the Hampshire Regiment about 1902.
Subject Date: About 1902
Owner: Hampshire Library and Information Service
Contributor: Hampshire Library and Information Service

Full Description: The handwritten caption at the back of the photograph says: Hampshire Volunteers. Colonel W Nash (Headmaster of Trafalgar House School) presenting Long Service Medals, 1902 or earlier. The ceremony is taking place on Castle Hill, outside the former Grand Jury Chamber. The barracks lay through the gateway. This was the headquarters of the 1st Battalion. The presenting officer may be Lieutenant Colonel the Reverend Walter B Naish MA, of Trafalgar House, curate of Weeke. The 1st Volunteer Regiment was formed in 1860, as a home defence measure during the Crimean War. Many of its officers and men saw active service in the Boer War. After reorganisation of the Territorial forces in 1908, it became the 4th Battalion Hampshire regiment. In 1907, its strength was 1,418. Incidentally, the distinctive diamond-shaped label stops on the Grand Jury Chamber building are hallmarks of the architectural work of Owen Browne Carter.
