Full Description: The illustration forms plate 60 of William Thorn Warren (ed). 1913. Winchester Illustrated. In the distance is the Shawford Viaduct of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Junction Railway. The southern section of the railway was opened in May 1885, and closed in the early 1960s. The viaduct is an impressive 32 brick arch structure, with the largest arch spanning the River Itchen. It still (2003) stands. A fishing lodge adorns the west bank of the Itchen.
