Brief Description: View of the Church of St Mary, Kings Worthy about 1910.
Subject Date: About 1910

Full Description: This photograph appears to be roughly contemporary with the account of the church in the Victoria History of Hampshire (VCH), volume 4, 1911, p. 432. Then the tower was so covered with ivy that little of it could be seen: the ivy hid several small windows. The tower, dating from the early nineteenth century, was the only part of the original church to escape the repair and rebuilding of 1864 by John Colson which "removed all traces of antiquity". Then the whole of the eastern part was rebuilt and a vestry added to the north of the chancel. The south chapel was added later. The tower was built of flint rubble, with limestone dressings. The principal entrance was by the west doorway in the tower. It had a round arch of two orders, with edge rolls continued down the jambs. The irregular churchyard was surrounded by a wood paling.
