Brief Description: A view of the Town Walls, Southampton about 1915.
Subject Date: About 1915
Creator: F G O Stuart
Owner: Hampshire Library and Information Service
Contributor: Hampshire Library and Information Service

Full Description: The arcaded Town Walls by West Quay, looking south. These date from the fourteenth century, and formed the access to the quay from the merchant's houses which backed onto the Town Wall. Before the harbour extensions of the 1930s, the shoreline of the River Test ran at the foot of the walls. Our postcard was postmarked on 30 January 1917. It was issued by F G O Stuart (no. 649). The daunting red-brick St Michael's House should be seen over the skyline top right. In the interests of the picturesque, Stuart has taken this out!
