Full Description: The foundation stone of this chapel in The Avenue was laid in 1888, and the church opened on 20 November 1889. It was built in the fourteenth-century Gothic style, with W Lunn as architect. We are looking down the tall, clerestoreyed nave, 83 feet in length, to the high altar. The interior stonework is of Bath stone. The two nave arcades consist of five bays, with octagonal piers and moulded capitals. The benches were of pitch pine and oak. The stained glass was supplied by Messrs Westlake, the carving executed by Mr A B Wall of Cheltenham. The high altar was erected in 1899. Reference: Dwyer, Gerald. 1969. A Short History of Saint Edmund's Church, Soton, p. 10-13.
