Brief Description: Photograph of Holy Rood Church, Southampton about 1910.
Subject Date: About 1910
Creator: L Levy and Sons

Full Description: Holy Rood is on the east side of High Street. It dates from 1320, but what we see in the postcard, with the exception of the tower and spire, was entirely rebuilt in 1849-50. The church was severly damaged in the Blitz of November 1940, when nearly all the Victorian work was destroyed. The medieval parts largely survived, and were restored in 1957 by the Corporation as a memorial to merchant seamen. The tower now lacks the wooden spire. The quarter jacks, still surviving and seen in the postcard in a recess in the tower, date probably from the late seventeenth or eighteenth century. The building far right is the Solent Yacht Stores, 28 Bridge Street, belonging to Lankester and Son Ltd, ironmongers, iron founders, engineers, and yacht and ship chandlers. Our postcard was issued by L Levy and Sons, a French firm which established an office in London about 1905. Their postcards are highly regarded by collectors.
