| Full Description: This fifty-foot high memorial to the Pilgrim Fathers on Western Esplanade was unveiled on 15 August 1913 by Dr Walter Hines Page, the American ambassador. It commemorates the day (15 August) in 1620 when the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America. It is a square, slightly tapering column of Portland stone. At the top is a cupola, the columns of which support a dome of gold and white mosaic, surmounted by a copper model of the Mayflower. It was designed by Richard McDonald Lucas, and was built by the local firm Garret and Haysom. The £500 needed was raised by public subscription. The original target of £2000 would have paid for the proposed representation of the Mayflower's bow projecting over the water's edge.
Note the cannon far left, part of the town's saluting battery. The hoarding behind says "English Matches for English Homes": an attempt perhaps to counter the influx of cheap matches from Scandinavia? The photographer was E W Mudge of Fawley. Our postcard is postmarked 18 July 1914.
