| Full Description: The Star Hotel, 26/27 High Street, had been one of Southampton's most important coaching inns. Coaches such as the Red Rover maintained a daily service to London and other large towns. Amongst its famous guests were the Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria who stayed here in 1831. At the time of the postcard, the hotel was owned by Scrase's Brewery. Alex Cornish-Trestrail was landlord of the Star for 36 years. His son, Arthur George, was equally well known in the trade, being landlord successively of the Wheatsheaf Hotel, the Bassett Hotel, the Sussex Hotel and the Cowherds. In the Second World War the Star was occupied by the American Navy. The building was completely restored in 1965, when the High Street façade was returned to its Georgian appearance. |
