| Full Description: The park lies between Above Bar Street, Brunswick Place, East Park Terrace and New Road. This, together with West Park and Palmerston Park, came to the borough under the Marsh Improvement Act of 1844. Under this, the Marsh lands near Itchen Bridge Road were drained and let on building leases. The proceeds were devoted to buying up leases on the East Marlands, from which the parks were created.
They were a matter of local pride, as the Southampton Annual, 1902 (p. 39) testifies: "And these Parks are not merely extensive, they are beautifully laid out, and considering the extent to which they are resorted to, kept beautifully trim and correct, their flower beds untouched by pilferers, and their tree boles free from the initials of "Arry" and "Arriet."
An alternative name for East Park is Andrews' Park. A statue to Richard Andrews (1796-1859), five times Mayor of Southampton, can just be seen in the centre of the postcard. The statue was erected in 1860, and moved to a lower base in 1971. |
