Full Description: The property was built for Sir John Dawtry, merchant and controller of the customs of the town, soon after 1500. It incorporated several older houses. It later became the residence of Sir Richard Lyster, Lord Chief Justice. By the late eighteenth century, the property was in decline and had been subdivided into separate tenancies. The main front (9 St Michael's Square, or Old Palace House) was at different times home to Josiah George Poole, architect and surveyor, and the bookbinding business of George Cawte. The outjettied entrance (10 St Michael's Square) was let to Pope and Co, dyers.
The whole building was bought and restored by W F G Spranger. It was subsequently purchased by the Corporation and opened in July 1912 as the town's first museum.
The building to the left of Tudor House - 59 Bugle Street - is an eighteenth-century house which still (2004) exists. Two storeys high, it has two sash windows and a square-headed door covered by a moulded flat hood (Hampshire Treasures).
The postcard was published by Prosser and Co, of London (Album Series 686).
