Full Description: The floating bridge between Chapel (in Southampton) and Woolston was a most profitable enterprise in the early twentieth century. A regular seven and a half minute service was being maintained, with, from 1899, two bridges running simultaneously, crossing in midstream. A record profit of £20,335 was achieved in 1919, with passenger tolls only a halfpenny. The increase in the population of Woolston, largely on the back of shipbuilding, was the main reason.
On the hard is No. 9 carriage bridge. This was delivered in April 1900 by Mordey, Carney and Co from the "Woolston Naval Works". Built of steel, it had centre-point beam engines and could cross the Itchen in two minutes if necessary. It was lit by electricity. The cost was £5868. The bridge was damaged by fire in May 1946. Repaired, it remained in service until 1964. It is believed to have sunk off Selsey when under tow for the Medway in the winter of 1974/5.
