Full Description: The buildings around the quadrangle are, looking from left to right, the brethren's rooms, the Master's House, the Hall, Beaufort Tower, the ambulatory (or cloister) and the west end of the church. All except the church were built by Cardinal Beaufort in the mid fifteenth century.
The brother's quarters on the west offered sheltered accommodation to about 25 brothers. They have flint walls (obscured by ivy) with tiny leaded windows, sloping tiled roofs and spectacular chimneys.
On the right of the print is the west front of the church, with its Early English doorway framed by tooth ornament and splendid west window in the Decorated style.
The print was published in T Hearne and W Byrne, Antiquities of Great Britain. |
