Brief Description: View of the King's House, Winchester from the east in 1733.
Subject Date: 1733
Creator: Nathaniel Buck; Samuel Buck
Owner: Hampshire Library and Information Service
Contributor: Hampshire Library and Information Service

Full Description: A view of the royal palace of Charles II drawn and engraved by the brothers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck. It is dated 1733. A very similar view by W Cave appears in [Thomas Warton]. 1773. The History and Antiquities of Winchester, volume 1, opposite p. 6. Warton describes the idea behind the building. "It was intended by the king for his summer's residence, and was to have been sufficient to entertain the whole court, with all kinds of sport and diversion. Here was particularly intended a large cupola, which was to have been carried thirty feet above the roof, so as to be seen a great way at sea…. The shell, when it was discontinued, is said to have cost upwards of twenty-five thousand pounds, although the building was no further prosecuted, than barely carried up to the roof, and covered." The whole contained 160 rooms. The royal palace was begun in 1683, but work was stopped on the king's death in 1685. It was finally destroyed by fire in 1894.
