Full Description: Born 6 December 1850 at Florence, Francis George Baring was educated at Eton. He was a lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade, 1870-6, and the Grenadier Guards, 1876-80. Baring joined his father in India when Viceroy, 1872-6, as aide-de-comp. After leaving the army, he was elected Liberal MP for Winchester, 1880-5, and, after the party was split by Irish Home Rule, he associated himself with the Liberal Unionist section as MP for North Bedfordshire, 1886-92. In his home county of Hampshire, Baring was a Deputy Lieutenant, and an Alderman of Hampshire County Council. He was a major (retired) in the 1st Hants Volunteers and a county magistrate. His main seat was at Stratton Park, where he held a large estate, and had houses in London at Hamilton Place and Portman Square. He succeeded his father as 2nd Earl Northbrook in 1904, and died on 12 April 1929.
