| Full Description: John Griffin was the first minister of the spacious King Street Chapel in Portsea, opened on 8 September 1813. This splendid Georgian chapel, seating 2500 and accommodating 3000 when crowded, was a large and lofty structure, with internally a balcony around three sides. It was demolished in 1893.
Griffin had earlier been pastor of the Tabernacle in Orange Street, near Southsea Common, opened in 1754. He had been active in encouraging vaccination against smallpox, pioneered by Thomas Jenner in 1796. |
