| Full Description: Henry John Temple was born at Broadlands in 1784, an estate which he inherited at the age of 17 years. As Lord Palmerston, he was a dominant figure in the political life of the early/mid nineteenth century. Secretary of War 1809-28 in successive Tory administrations, he joined the Whigs after the fall of the Huskisson government to become Foreign Secretary 1830-4, 1835-41, 1846-51, and Prime Minister 1855-8 and June 1859. He sat in sixteen Parliaments as MP for Newport (Isle of Wight) 1807-11, the University of Cambridge 1811-31, South Hampshire 1832-4, and Tiverton 1835-65. As an Irish peer, he was entitled to sit in the House of Commons. The Grand Cross of the Bath (GCB) was awarded him in 1832.
In Hampshire, he was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Hampshire Militia. He was active in the work of Broadlands estate, and in 1852 he bought land in neighbouring Lee. He was responsible for the lovely little chapel there built in 1862 and still surviving. There is a statue to him, by Matthew Noble, in Romsey Market Place.
Lord Palmerston died at Brocket Park on 18 October 1865. |
