Brief Description: Painting of the Church of St Andrew, Swarraton, probably by William Edward Frost, about 1845.
Subject Date: About 1845
Creator: William Edward Frost
Owner: Hampshire Library and Information Service
Contributor: Hampshire Library and Information Service

Full Description: The church was pulled down in 1849 when the rectory of Swarraton was annexed to the chapelry of Northington by Order in Council in 1849. It was not replaced. An elegant cross was erected on the site of the church by the Hon Miss Baring in 1858. Burials were continued until the churchyard was closed in May 1886. The church was a small building, perhaps scarcely sufficient to hold fifty people. It may date from the twelfth century. The church contained no ancient brasses or monuments. There were two small bells. The wooden spire, enclosing the bell turret, was added by Alexander Baring in 1820, together with a family pew projecting from the north wall. Externally, there was a doorway on the south side, with a porch. The east window (hidden in the illustration) was without stained glass, and built up more than half way. Internally, a gallery reached across the east end, and the pulpit was placed against the south wall. Reference: Eyre, William L W. 1890. A Brief History of the Parishes of Swarraton and Northington (reprinted 1997), p. 57-8.
