| Full Description: A coaching inn on the Portsmouth Road, much admired by nineteenth-century writers. Graphic descriptions are given in Rev G N Godwin. [1882]. The Green Lanes of Hampshire, Surrey, and Sussex and in Charles G Harper. 1895. The Portsmouth Road. To quote Harper (p. 232), it "can boast quite a concourse of royal visitors, from the first dawn of its history until the childhood of Queen Victoria; while as for historic people of less degree (although very great folk indeed in their own way), why, they are to be counted in battalions." Names include the Duke of Clarence (later William IV), the Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria, Samuel Pepys and John Wilkes. In 1895, the guest rooms had such designations as "King", "Queen", "Crown" and "George".
Originally of two storeys, a third was added later under a mansard tiled roof. It is of whitewashed brick with a heavy cornice and egg and dart moulding below. Sash and half hexagonal bay windows on two floors (Hampshire Treasures). |
