Full Description: During a four year long excavation of Oyster Street in the late 1960s early 70s and occupation sequence from 12-13th century to modern times was uncovered. Excavations uncovered evidence of a 12th century settlement in the form of gullies, post holes, a 13-14th century timber water cistern and an oven. Oyster Street lay alongside the camber which was the original medieval harbour of Portsmouth. During the 14th and 15th centuries it was the site of storage buildings, a dock and a quay. By the 17th and 18th century it had become an important industrial area , most notably for clay pipe making. Ref: www.portsmouthmuseums.co.uk
