Full Description: Erected in 1777 as an entrance to Portsea through the newly constructed fortifications across Queen Street. When the ramparts were removed in 1871 it was taken down and re-erected as an entrance to the Naval Entrance. It was moved from this position and lay in storage for many years before being used as the base for the new semaphore tower in the dockyard in 1929. Here it was to serve as an entrance to the jetty where ships departed for their mission and was re-christened the Gate of the Empire.
