Full Description: The Slough Social Centre/Community Centre was the idea of Noel Mobbs, a founder of the Slough Trading Estate, with the aim of providing leisure facilties for local workers and their families. Funds for the building were contributed by Horlicks, Aspro, High Duty Alloys, Mars, Slough Estates, and Mobbs himself. Designed by Wallis Gilbert (who also designed the Hoover Building), it had a separate youth club, a swimming pool, and a creche for working mothers. It hosted drama, dancing, badminton, and roller skating, and was the home of the Slough Philharmonic Society. The Social Centre was opened by Lady Astor in 1937, and visited by Queen Mary two months later. In late 1937, the new King and Queen visited the Social Centre, where in the bar lounge the Queen beat the King at a game of darts. The building in this image was demolished in the 1990s; a new Community Centre was built on the same site, opening in the summer of 1998. 'Hawkes Copyright' is noted on the image. 'Threeways Stoke Poges, Slough, Bucks' is the caption on the reverse of the postcard. This was the home address of Richmond Hawkes.
