Full Description: The Hippodrome Theatre stood on the corner of Birchett Road and Station Road. It was built in 1913 and replaced a cluster of derelict buildings dating from the late 1850s. According to Col Cole's book "The Story of Aldershot" written in 1951 "the Hippodrome provides for a class of entertainment in the form of touring revues, variety acts and pantomimes
as it is the only variety theatre in the old music-hall style in this part of the country" Although it never was turned into a cinema like so many other theatres it was demolished in 1962 and an office block built on the site. Beyond the partly demolished theatre can be seen the shops on the curve of Station Road including Reeves Fish and Chip shop partly obscured by the corner of the Hippodrome and Don Donald the tobacconist. |
