Brief Description: The first Slough Social Centre, also known as the Community Centre, Farnham Road ,Slough. This image shows the Centre at about the time of its opening in 1937.
Subject Date: About 1937
Owner: Slough Library
Contributor: Slough Library

Full Description: The Slough Social Centre/Community Centre was the idea of Noel Mobbs, a founder of the Slough Trading Estate, with the aim of providing leisure facilties for local workers and their families. Funds for the building were contributed by Horlicks, Aspro, High Duty Alloys, Mars, Slough Estates, and Mobbs himself. Designed by Wallis Gilbert (who also designed the Hoover Building), it had a separate youth club, a swimming pool, and a creche for working mothers. It hosted drama, dancing, badminton, and roller skating, and was the home of the Slough Philharmonic Society. The Social Centre was opened by Lady Astor in 1937, and visited by Queen Mary two months later. In late 1937, the new King and Queen visited the Social Centre, where in the bar lounge the Queen beat the King at a game of darts. The building in this image was demolished in the 1990s; a new Community Centre was built on the same site, opening in the summer of 1998. 'Hawkes Copyright' is noted on the image. 'Threeways Stoke Poges, Slough, Bucks' is the caption on the reverse of the postcard. This was the home address of Richmond Hawkes.

Brief Description: The Windmill Hotel, which was situated on the Bath Road at Salt Hill, Slough. About 1905.
Subject Date: About 1905
Owner: Slough Library
Contributor: Slough Library

Full Description: The original Windmill Inn (often referred to as 'Botham's' after its proprietors) was a well known coaching inn which hosted such notable people as the Dukes of Wellington and Devonshire, Pitt the younger, the Prince Regent, the Emperor of Russia, the King of Prussia, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The inn had extensive gardens on the south side of the road, including renowned watercress beds. The building itself was made of dark red brick, and had a verandah on the ground floor. Covering the front of the building was one of the finest wisterias in England. After a fire in 1882, Wethered's Brewery of Marlow built the Windmill Hotel on the same site, which despite its name was a pub rather than an inn. The distinctive terracotta model windmill which sat on top of one of the hotel's gables is just visible in this image. The Windmill was demolished in 2000 and The Windmill Care Home now stands on the site. This card is postmarked 11 September 1905.

Brief Description: Illustration of the Mail Coach that ran from London to Bristol, via Bath. About 1784.
Subject Date: About 1784.
Owner: Slough Library
Contributor: Slough Library

Full Description: This illustration shows 'The Original Bath Mail Coach', conceived, financed and promoted by John Palmer, a Bath businessman and theatre owner. In the 1700s the postal service was slow and unreliable. In August 1784 John Palmer's fast efficient coach service between London and Bristol via Bath had its first run. Slough was one of the stops on this 16 hour route. According to Fraser's 'The History of Slough', in the first half of the 19th century mail coaches and post-chaises passed through Slough every half-hour daily from 4 am to 6 pm. Coaching inns such as The Black Boy, The Crown, The Reindeer, The Dolphin, The Windmill, and the Three Tuns serviced the route. This postcard has a copyright notice from 1973 for the Post Office.

Brief Description: Salt Hill Mill pond in the Salt Hill Recreation Ground, Bath Road, Slough. About 1920.
Subject Date: About 1920.
Owner: Slough Library
Contributor: Slough Library

Full Description: Salt Hill Mill Pond was the western boundary of the Slough Recreation Ground. At one time a watermill stood at this site upon the Farnham Brook, which ran from the north into Chalvey Brook and Eton to the south. Camden's map of 1675 shows a mill at Salt Hill. The Recreation Ground was given to the town through the generosity of James Elliman. He provided 26 acres of land that had once belonged to the Godolphin family, the buildings and landscaping. An additional £10,000 was given to create an endowment fund for its' upkeep. The park was opened in March 1907 and is now known as Salt Hill Park. In March 2007, the centenary of the park was marked by the planting of a tree in the park by descendants of James Elliman. The postcard is part of the "Exclusive Sepiatone Series" published by The Photochrom Co Ltd, London and Tunbridge Wells, and is numbered 58553.
