Full Description: Physical description: Holy Trinity Church was originally built in 1696. Having been enlarged in 1734 and about 1835, it was remodelled in 1887 with the west end completely rebuilt, and a new tower was added in 1889. The tower (campanile) is detached and to the north west of the church. It is a stuccoed, brick building. Origins: Captain Henry Player and local merchants and businessmen obtained sanction for a new church for Gosport from Reverend John Hunt, Rector of Alverstoke, and Peter Mews, the Bishop of Winchester, in 1694. Henry Player contributed to its construction by sending 14 oak trees on ox-pulled carts from his Farnham (Surrey) estate. They were used as pillars. The remodelling was conducted by Blomfield and was intended to emulate a medieval Italian Lombard basilica. Holy Trinity was assigned as a separate parish in 1860, previously being a chapelry of St Mary, Alverstoke. References: 1.
